I would like to re-naturalize my shoreline. What are some native plants that are suitable to shorelines in Muskoka?
Native plants are the perfect choice for shoreline plantings. Native plants are tolerant of Muskoka’s climate, can outcompete weeds once they are established, provide habitat and food for wildlife, and are resistant to pests and disease.
- The attached fact sheet, lists plants that are suitable for shoreline re-naturalization projects in Muskoka. Fact Sheet.
- Be sure to research the growing conditions suitable for each plant. A good place to access this information is the Evergreen Native Plant Database. http://nativeplants.evergreen.ca/
- Muskoka Heritage Foundation hosts an Annual Native Tree and Shrub sale every May. It is a pre-order event. The 2012 order form will be available in April. Check back to the website!
What species are at risk in Muskoka? How can I help them?
The Muskoka Heritage Foundation published a Species at Risk guide in the spring of 2010. Access it here.
- The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Royal Ontario Museum work together to maintain comprehensive information about species at risk in Ontario. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/Species/2ColumnSubPage/276503.html
- The Georgian bay Biosphere Reserve also has a great website that profiles species at risk in our area: http://www.gbbr.ca/species-at-risk/list-of-species-at-risk.html
I want to build a trail on my property, help!
Before enjoying the many benefits of trails, careful planning and consideration must first be given to building them. There are a few overarching principles to consider when thinking about how a trail or a trail network will fit your property. Some of the main factors to consider are different uses for your trail, design and drainage.
- An exceptional resource for trail building in Ontario is: http://www.ontariotrails.on.ca/media/files/pdf/member-archives/reports/Ontario’s%20Best%20Trails%20-%20%20Full%20Document.pdf
- Another great resource is: The Complete Guide to Trail Building and Maintenance, 4th Edition, 2008 by Appalachian Mountain Club Books
- Muskoka is home to a variety of parks and trail networks. The Muskoka Trails Council has maps of most trails: www.muskokatrailscouncil.com. While you’re out enjoying them, notice the different trail-building techniques that have been used to navigate water crossings, drainage, elevation and other features. This can be a great way to learn how you might incorporate different features into your own trails.
