Robert Stephen Dick M. Eng., P. Eng.

Few people can claim to have combined their passion and their profession. The night sky has drawn Robert Dick outside for forty years. For over twenty-five of these years, Robert has been sharing his knowledge and interest with the public. He has introduced thousands to the science and passion of astronomy and stargazing through public education and university courses. With slides, videotapes and films, Robert brings the sky alive for the audience. For twenty-five years, he has delivered well-illustrated talks to general audiences at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. For over fifteen years, he has given full credit introductory courses on astronomy that are distributed nationwide on videotape. He has also delivered many one-week mini-courses and assorted five-evening workshops on stargazing, stellar astronomy, and planetary astronomy.

Based on his reputation as a communicator and educator, he was invited by the Canadian Space Agency to be the astronomy instructor for the Canadian Astronauts.

Robert has built progressively larger telescopes to expand his view of the stars, nebulae and galaxies that populate the sky. With his private observatory in Eastern Ontario, one of the largest in Canada, he continues to study celestial phenomena and to record his observations to further astronomy and to support his public presentations. These educational products are made available to others through Starlight Theatre (www.starlight-theatre.ca).

Through articles in newspapers and magazines, with contributions to several CD-ROM products and appearances on television and radio, Robert brings a lifelong interest and respect for the Universe to the public of all ages.

As an active member in the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) for almost 35 years, Robert co-created the Light Pollution Abatement Program in Ottawa and later transferred this program nationally across the RASC.
