WE TAKE OUR
LEADERSHIP ROLE
VERY SERIOUSLY.

Our sincere interest in
sustaining the health
and wellness of
Muskoka's natural
environment
has been the cornerstone
of the Foundation's efforts
and will continue to guide
us in all our future
endeavours.

Our Record Of Integrity

Founded in 1987, the Muskoka Heritage Foundation is the only voice that speaks
authoritatively, knowledgeably and caringly for all of Muskoka. We are a
volunteer-based, non-profit organization dedicated solely to the protection and
enhancement of Muskoka's natural, cultural and built heritage.

An Ongoing Commitment
From the very beginning our mandate has been to actively protect, conserve and
nurture the natural history and traditions of Muskoka through research, stewardship,
education, advocacy and dynamic environmental leadership. We take great pride in
our role as an authority on all matters pertaining to the Muskoka environment. Our
work and accomplishments encompass the following areas.

Environmental Leadership
We encourage environmentally responsible behaviour through public awareness
programs, annual awards and shoreline restoration projects. We also promote sound
environmental practices such as wetland protection, dark sky initiatives and the
planting of indigenous trees and shrubs.

Enhanced Land Stewardship
We continue to develop programs that help educate property owners to become
better stewards of their Muskoka land.

Responsible Land Conservation
We established the Muskoka Heritage Trust in 1996 to protect sensitive wetlands
and other ecologically important lands in perpetuity. We currently hold over 1,000
acres of land in nature reserves and conservation easements.

Effective Advocacy
We advocate on important issues relating to the Muskoka environment - such as
planning approaches, protection of natural areas and maintenance of ecological
integrity - with all levels of government.

Optimum Watershed Management
In partnership with the District Municipality of Muskoka, we established the Muskoka
Watershed Council in 2001 as a means of best promoting the region's watershed
health. We also work closely with cottager and lake associations on water quality
monitoring programs for all lakes and rivers.
