WAYLAND DREW NATURAL HERITAGE AWARD

Wayland Drew Award

The Foundation has awarded the Wayland Drew Natural Heritage Award regularly since 1999. It is presented to honour Wayland Drew, a man who truly loved the wilderness and natural places. His commitment to the natural world carried into his work as a writer, teacher, and environmentalist. He authored twelve books, taught close to twenty years, and spearheaded a major environmental conference. In 1992, Wayland Drew was presented with the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Conservation by the Conservation Council of Ontario. Sadly, in December 1998, he lost his life battling ALS.

With the support of the Drew family, the Foundation initiated the award to recognize individuals who demonstrate environment leadership, conservation, and education or awareness of Muskoka's natural heritage. Recipients of this award have their names inscribed on the beautiful and symbolic Bear Manitou sculpture created by Brenda Wainman-Goulet and receive a mounted medallion reproduction of the sculpture.
